Third Conviction For Intoxication

A sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Aden Harry August Pearson, mechanic, aged 30, when he appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Featherston Street. The magistrate ordered that his licence be cancelled and that he be prohibited from obtaining another for live years. Sub-Inspector L. Ji. Capp, who prosecuted, said that. Pearson crashed bis ear into tlie safety-zone outside tlie railway station at 2.20 a.m.ion Sunday. A constable heard the crash but on investigation could not find the driver. He finally discovered Pearson hiding in the shadow of the tramshed. Pearson admitted be was the driver and was taken to Central Police Station. He was examined by Dr. E. G. Gibbs, who certified him as being intoxicated. Pearson bad travelled through the town at an excessive speed and nearly knocked down two pedestrians, said Sub-Inspector Capp. He had twice previously been convicted of the same offence.

Harry Leonard, aged 25. motor mechanic, lor intoxication in charge of motor-vehicles. The police said that there were three arrests for this class of offence during the weekend. The magistrate, Mr. Orr Walker, said that the term of imprisonment had recently been reduced from three or four weeks to one week, but if tlie increase continued he would have to impose a heavier penalty.
