AUCKLAND, May 6. “The issue of conscription lias been mentioned tonight, and I do not want to treat it lightly." said the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, speaking at the opening of the campaign ol Mr. I’. Carr, official Labour Party candidate for the vacant Auckland West seat at Ponsonby tonight. "I said on previous occasions that, if our shores were invaded or if there was threat of invasion, every man and woman and every penny ot money would be at tile disposal of tile State,” Mr. Fraser said, amid applause. “The Labour Party and the Government have stood for the voluntary system, which, up to die present time, lias been a great success,” lie added. A voice: But it is not fair. Mr. Fraser: The Government adheres to the voluntary system. The war effort of New Zealand was also discussed briefly by Mr. Carr. He said he was 100 ;>er cent, behind the policy of the Government in regard to the war.
