Waterside’s Narrow Win From Marist SWIFTS IN FORM Technical Old Boys Upset Petone The second games in the first round of the Wellington Football iLssociation’s first A division competition on Saturday produced fast, and exciting football with Waterside, .beating Marist by the odd goal in three and Swifts scoring a comfortable win against Institute Old Boys. Technical Old Boys, bottom team at the end of last year, sprang a surprise by beating the championship holders. Petone, and Seatoun proved too solid for Hospital. As a result of Saturday’s matches, only two teams, Swifts and Seatoun, are unbeaten. Results:

Waterside 2, Marist 1. Seatoun 6, Hospital 3. Swifts 6, Institute Old Boys I. Technical Old Boys 3, Petone 0. Hard-fought Gaine. ( Waterside, who wdre unexpectedly beaten by Swifts in the opening game of the season, had a ■ close call against Marist, who played fast and clever football to told Waterside to a draw till about ten minutes before the end, when the Chatham Cup holders improved their play and scored to win by _ two goals_ to one. It was a game full of incident, with both, teams throwing the ball about, Marist s short-passing had the Waterside defence in trouble often, but the shooting of. the forwards lacked snap, and the Waterside halves and backs kept well up with the ball, and cleared when danger threatened. The Marist goal had some narrow escapes, but Turkington was playing well and earned applause for frequent good saves. It took Waterside 30 minutes to score their first goal, though they came close more than once earlier in the game. Longlbottom was playing a great game on the wing, swinging the ball into the centre, and he made many openings for the inside forwards. Finally R. Ward found a gap in the defence, and scored a good goal. Five minutes before half-time Marist forced a corner, the ball going back to Thompson, who headed a neat “ Fortunes varied in the second half. Hatchard was .playing clever football tor Marist, but was well watched. Longbottom. moved to inside left, where his clever touches often had the Marist backs guessing. Ten minutes before full-time he slammed home a hard shot to put Waterside ahead, and Marist were kept mostly on the defensive for the rest of the game. The teams were: — Waterside: S. Ward; Hames, Bolton; Calder, Hazel, Traynor; McCarthy, Walker, K. Ward, Robb, Longbottom. ' Marist: Tarkington; Duffy, Nunns; Darragh, Foley, Vaney; Leonard, Thompson, Marshall, Hatehard, Price. Dashing Win. Hospital, strengthened by the acquisition of R. and M. Quirke, from Marist, gave 'an improved showing on their previous week’s display, but it availed them little .against a dashing, well-balanced Seatoun side. In the first half, on the general run of play, there was little between the teams, but Seatoun, a little more fortunate in their goal raids, hem a goal lead at the interval. Tanner opened Seatoun’s account when his low drive cannoned off Johnston to surprise Trewick. Minutes later Edmunds scored for .Seatoun from a penalty kick. In a hectic rally near the close of the first spell. Hospital reduced the margin when M. Quirke scored a neat goal. > _ The second half was a real thriller, anu full of incident, with a further six goals being scored, despite solid defensive work by both teams. With Johnston scoring twice in succession, and another one by Belcher, Sea'toun had a big lead in goals. Hospital, in the closing stages, put up a determined attack, and despite McKenzie’s good work in the Seatoun goal, scored twice through Jeromson and R. Quirke. Seatoun, however, put the issue beyond doulbt when Edmunds scored from a great centre .by Tanner to give his side victory by six goals to three.

The teams were: — Hospital: H. Trerwick; W. Miles, E. Jeffrey; W. Rogers, J. Todd, H. Hanscomlbe; G. iLawler. J. Mehle, R. Quirke, J. Jeromson, M. Quirke. ■Seatoun: L. McKenzie; K. B. Yeoman; Richardson, R. Boyes, C. Yeoman ; N. Edmonds, R. Cullen, D. Johnston, C. Belcher. N. Tanner. Referee: 'Mr. F. Callaghan. Easy for Swifts.

Showing better balance than Institute, Swifts scored an easy win by six goals to one when the two teams met on the No. 2 ground at the Basin Reserve. The combination between the Swifts forwards and halves enabled them to control the game for considerable periods. Swifts played as a team but Institute relied too much on individual efforts. Baker, the Swifts centre-forward,_ had a field clay, scoring five out of his side’s six erpßlS. Within five minutes of the start of the game, Chapman adroitly drew the defence and shot the ball across the goal-line where Baker back-heeled it into the net. Shortly afterward, Hickmott worked his way into the centre, beating two players, and then passed to Baker who scored. After Baker had scored again, Institute broke away and West beat Tonks with a shot from well out. Shortly before halftime Baker scored from a penalty, making the score 4-1 in Swifts’ favour at half-time. , — ; Though Institute macle some determined raids in the second spell, they were unable to score and Baker and Hickmott ench scored for Swifts to make the finnl score Swifts 6, Institute 1.

The teams were:— Swifts: Tonks; Salisbury, Oliver, A. Whyte, Chapman, C. MacGregor; P. MacGregor, J. Whyte, Baker. Shankie, HiekInstitute Old Boys: Morris; Suratr, McLean; Scott. Bohertson, J odd; larry, Davies, West, Rogers, Whyte. Referee: Mr, G. Jackson. Petone Fail Again. After a fast, exciting game, Technical Old Boys beat Petone by three goals to nil at Petone. Technical, showing greatly improved form, were too fast for their opponents and also their tional plav was better. Alter winning the toss Technical immediately set up a hot attack but the I’etone defence was safe Petone seemed unable to get going properly and several promising attacks broke down when a goal seemed nkc*y • Technical had most of the play in the first, half and were unfortunate not to be leading by more than one goal at balltime, Delaney in goal for Petone bringing ,off several brilliant saves, lecliniefll s’ first goal came from a beaiitilully-placed corner by Stewart and was headed in by Liddicoat. There seemed some doubt as to whether the ball was in the goal or not from the sideline but the referee was on the goal-line and he could see clearly. Petone made some alterations in their team in the second half. Leslie going Io right-wing, McLaggan to centre-half anil Watts to centre-forward but they sti I found the Technical defence too good. Petone had more of the play bill were never so dangerous as Technical were when fliev broke away. Tim fast pace began to tell on Petone toward the end ol the game and after some neat play N. Gates scored Technic.'il’s second goal and shortly afterward Upchurch added another. ’Pile following were I lie teams: - Technical Gid Boys: Turner; Hodson. McCarthy; Seymour. A.
