SURPRISE WIN BY FIDELIS
Southland Meeting RITCHIE MEMORIAL TO GUSTE Dominion Special Service. INVERCARGILL. May 4. The Southland Racing Club's winter meeting waw held in drizzling rain. The track was heavy and was a quagmire at the finish. There was a fair attendance. The totalizator handled £11,822, as against £13,056/10/-. a decrease of £1234/10/First Start as Hurdler. Garonne made an exhibition of his field in the Southland Hurdle Handicap. He was making his first appearance as a hurdler, ami lie was ojie of the outsiders of the field, for which his stablemate Turaki wasUmcked down to a short price. Garonne paid almost two score to win. He led over the first fence and three furlongs from home opened up a lead of 10 lengths. He was not troubled to retain this lead to the finish. Hunting Chorus, who was in third place most of the way, bent the others as easily. Turaki, who tailed the field till the sixfurlong post, made up a lot of ground to be third. Qalrymple was a poor fourth, ahead 1 of All Blood. Vitaplione broke a fetlock and was destroyed. A Great Finish. Making his first appearance from R. E. McLellan's stable, Black Bard won the Myross Handicap with a great finishing run.' Aravane anticipated the start, but he was immediately pulled up. Royal Lancer and Gold Robe made all the running, and just as Royal Lancer hud the measure of Gold Robe half, way down the straight, Black Bard put in his claim. Big Dividend. Fidelis, second outsider in the Awarua Handicap, upset, calculations and paid a win dividend of almost three parts of a score. Silkwood tried to win all the way, but half way down the running she was headed by Wild Career. Vv ild Careet- looked a winner a few yards from the post, when Fidelis put in his claim wide out on the better going and '"’oj l going awav by one length and a halt. Silkwood was a similar distance away, third, and Peony Rose, close up. fourth. Peonv Rose had every chance. Heidelberg trailed the field all the way, and, though well placed into the straight, did not finish on. Mona’s Song could nor handle the going and Waitoru pulled hard in the early rtnining and had little in reserve.' Fidelis is a brother to Catalogue, and this was his first win since coming to Southland. Gusto’s Good Record. Guste won his fourth nice in six starts over country when he beat the others pointlessly in the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase. He took charge with five furlongs to go and at the home turn put a break of 10 lengths on Poniard and Gay Boa. with Trisox, who had been prominent ?arly. beaten off. Guste came on to win very easily. His jumping right through was of an excellent standard, and he had too much pace on the lint for the. others. Gay Boa had a round to go when his. rider lost his irons and his saddle also slipped. In spite of, this disadvantage lie was always well up with the leaders over the last round, and did well to be second. Slayer was well out of it in the early running, and his third was a promising showing. Won From End To End.
Irish Fling won the Bluff Handicap from end to end. Bow Street was n useful second, after being well up all the way. Vanity Queen was a moderate third. The others were right out of it. Sterling Performance. Spendthrift put. up a sterling performance to win the President's Handicap after a great, duel with Blissful Lady, whom lie beat by a head. Spendthrift, Ortyx and Pink Bond were slow away. Spendthrift moved into fourth place behind Nigger Boy, Blissful Lady and Ortyx at the home turn, and this was the order into the straight. Blissful Lady looked a winner at the distance, but Spendthrift finished too well for her, to win by a head. Nigger Boy, who ran about in the straight, was a length and a half away third. Pink Bond was a good fourth, ahead of Phalanx and Ortyx, who did not carry on. Details Of The Racing' SOUTHLAND HURDLE HANDICAP, of £155. One mile and a half. 8/7 GARONNE. 9.0 (C. F.
