The effect of the war on Suez Canal traffic is Indicated by statistics issued lor the month of October. 1939. They reveal that the canal has suffered a reduelion of one-third of its normal peace-time traffic. Trade has decreased correspondingly owing to the reduction of imports. South; hound traffic during October totalled 135 vessels. (>57,3(12 tons of cargo and 9907 passengers. This compares with 256 vessels, 657,362 toons oof oeargoo oand 23,302 passengers for the corresponding period of 1938. During Hie same mouth north-bound traffic totalled 150 ships carrying 1,001.707 tons of cargo and 5316 passengers. against 2C.4 vessels. 1,854.507 tons of cargo and 10.107 passengers for October, 1938. Of the 166 south-bound shins. 85 were British, 34 Italian. 13 Greek. 12 Dutch, b French. 4 Danish, 5 Norwegian. 2 Egyptian, 2 Yugoslav, ami 1 American. 1 Hungarian and 1 Panamanian. The figures for northbound traffic arc practically the same. Despite the diminution of south-bound traffic during October, the figures for the period from January to October 31. 1939, show a higher total of cargo tonnage and passengers than during the corresponding period of tin- previous year. North-bound traffic for the same period, however, did not show any increase.
