LOW CONSUMPTION
Butter In United Kingdom PRODUCERS’ POSITION WORSE (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright.) (Received May 5, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 4. New Zealand and /Australia have continued their efforts to secure increased .shinning facilities, New Zealand particularly being interested in securing ships tor apples*. The butler position is becoming worse from the producers’ standpoint, ’traders now estimate that United Kingdom consumption is little more than four ounces a head, which is half the permitted ration. , , A highly-placed official, in denying the suggestion that New Zealand and Australian producers were unfairly treated, claimed that it should be remembered that New Zealand and Australia already received a substantial preference. It would not appear that the quantity of New Zealand butter exported to the United Kingdom could be increased even if the retail price was lowered. The official promised to investigate the question of the publicity at present given margarine. It was pointed out that New Zealand and Australian butter had not only lost its identity but all propaganda encouraging the consumption of butter ceased on the outbreak of war. On the other hand margarine producers were advertising heavily, also the 8.8. C. periodically gives talks emphasizing the food value of margarine.
