TO STOP SPREAD OF WAR
Efforts Of President Roosevelt TALK WITH ITALIAN AMBASSADOR By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copy right WASHINGTON, May. 3. At a Press conference. President Roosevelt indicated that the United States is working actively to prevent the extension of the war into Italy or the Mediterranean. Mr. Roosevelt said that the United States consistently endeavoured to prevent the spread of the war, but he did not reveal whether the current efforts for peace arc. as direct as his personal intervention in the crisis before the outbreak of war last September. LONDON, May 3. Ju disclosing today that the United States Government is making a iresli effort to prevent the war from spreading to other areas and other nations. President Roosevelt did not mention any specific area, bur. it is assumed .in 'Wasihingiton Hint lie had the Mediterranean in mind, because he indicated that his Government's efforts had been made plain at a talk yesterday with the Italian Ambassador. This lias been followed by a report that the United States Ambassador to Italy (Mr, Phillips), is on his way to Florence, where he is expected to see Mr. .Myron Taylor, President Roosevelt's Envoy at the Vatican. This week Mr. Taylor had many conversations at Vatican City, and Mr. Phillips saw Signor Mussolini and Count Ciano in the last three days.
