PUBLIC SERVICE

Contribution To Expenses Of War ENLISTMENTS FROM STAFF Appreciation of the excellent spirit prevailing throughout the Public Service wa.s expressed.on Saturday by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser. Not only were all departments working strenuously and keenly in the war effort, but the response they were making by way of enlistments was very heartening. “Further evidence of Hie splendid feeling throughout the service is seen in the action of the Public Service Association, representing those departments under Hie control of the Public Service Commissioner, voting £5OO of its funds as an juterest-free loan to the Government for the duration of the war and six months thereafter,” said Mr. Fraser. "An auxiliary of the association, the Government Buildings Refreshment Booms Committee, which controls the refreshment rooms for officers in the Government Buildings in Wellington and Auckland, has

taken similar action to the extent of £lO2O. “Not only that, but the Public Service Association has donated £5OO to ; the National Patriotic Fund, and the ’ members of the service have voluntarily offered a monthly donation to the fund by way of deduction from their salaries. This .splendid gesture 1 is worthy of the highest, praise and the support of every thinking public servant. Even though individual subscriptions be quite small, the aggregate sum over a period will be impressive. “Facilities have been extended to the Public Service Association by the National Patriotic Fund Board by making the association an official collecting agent. The Treasury has agreed to accept orders on salary for voluntary individual monthly contributions, while the Public Service Commissioner has communicated with all permanent heads asking that, all controlling officers should co-operate in ensuring that every public servant has an opportunity of participating in the monthly contributions.”
