Items Of Interest From The Provinces

FARMERS TO CONFER Interprovincial Meeting Of Union In Wanganui Dominion Special Service. This year's Wellington interprovineial Farmers’ Union conference will be held in Wanganui toward the end of this month, and will be attended by representatives from the Wairarapa. Southern Hawke's Bay, Maimwatu, Wellington Central, and Wanganui districts. In addition to remits from the branches, the conference will discuss the best means the farming community can adopt to help the war effort.

Wanganui Recruits X-Rayed. The whole of the 127 recruits for the third echelon of the Expeditionary Force who were X-rayed at Wanganui Public Hospital were passed as fit. The area officer, Major S, H. Gould, paid a tribute to the staff of tlie hospital for the efficient manner in which the examinations had been conducted.

Three of Four Sons Serving. Residents of the Esk Vulley, Hawkes Bay, are proud o-f tlie record of military service of one. of their families,, that ot Mr, and Airs. W. Bench, who have three of their four sons serving in the military forces. One son. Air. David Bench, is now in Egypt, and two others. Messrs. George, who is married, and Frederick Reneh are members of . tlie second echelon. The fourth son is also married.

Noxious Weed Schedule. At -the request of the inspector ot noxious weeds, Mr. A. W. Trotter, the Rang.itikei County Council has decided to ask the Minister to have “thorn apple” placed on the schedule and declared a noxious weed.

Chinese Catholic Priest. The Rev. Father Joseph Liu, a C-hinesc Catholic priest-, who rcipresented the hierarch and clergy of China at the National Eucharistic Congress in M c,-1-ington in February, is visiting Palmerston North, and preached at 'all Masses in St. Patrick’s Church. yesterday, appealing for assistance for the missions in ■his country. During his missionarytravels, he has visited Australia, the United States. Canada, Eire, England, ‘Scotland, Holland, Sweden, France, India, Ceylon, and the Philippine Islands. •Father Liu has spent 28 years working ■as a native missionary in his own country.

Farewell to Schoolmasters., At a farewell at AVairarapa College on Friday, presentations were made to ■Major C. J. Williams and Lieutenant H. •H. Hollow, former members of the college staff, who are at .present in camp. ■Air. L. Daniell, a board member, referred ■to the high sense of duty which had ■prompted their guests to join the forces, and the principal of the college, Air. G. G. Haneox, spoke of their excellent work in the library amd woodwork departments. A pipe and tobacco pouch was presented to each guest on behalf of the school pupils, and- later the staff presented each with a fountain pen.

Rearing Young Trout. In one of ,+he ponds in the Palmerston North Efeplande some thousands of young trout are being reared by the Acclimatization Society, and will later be liberated in streams in the district. During a visit to the Esplande tlie mayor, Air. Mansford, and members of the city council, saw tlie young trout being fed, and their healthy appearance seemed to justify the experiment of rearing the fish in tine pond.

Masonic Lodge Delegates. A .party of Australian delegates to the centennial conference' of the Alnsonie. Grand Lodge, recently held in Christchurch, visited Napier on Friday night, leaving for Taupo and Rotorua on Saturday mornin.g. The party consisted of Messrs. J. L. Potter, A. A. L. Ro-wley, J. F. Godfree, C. L, Trevelion, and J. P. Barclay (South Australia). Mr. AV. H. Green and Colonel J. W. G. Annand (Queensland), and Mr. H. O. Green (Sydney).
