BIBLE IN SCHOOLS LEAGUE
Review Of Work In 1939 It was worthy of note, states the annual report of the New Zealand Bible in Schools’ League for 1939, that there had been a pleasing absence of conflict. In a year which had witnessed the' outbreak of a second world war, the work of the league had presented a striking contrast. Earlier years had -witnessed many a wordy battle in gaining, recognition for the claims of the Bible .in the schools of the land, but if the experience of .1939 could be taken as a guide, the period of conflict was passing, and in its place came a period of 'more unobtrusive constructional work, less striking, but more effective in good results. There had been less Press notice, but more real benefit in the lives of children. As daily in several hundred schools the pupils joined in a reverent opening of the dny with praise, prayer, and a short Scripture 'reading. and once a week a couple of thousand clergymen and other Christian workers gave a half-hour lesson on the .Bible, there was being brought to bear on young hearts and minds the most potent influences that made for good character.
