No Involvement In European War INDEPENDENT ACTION (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) 4'o KI O, May 2. The Prime Minister, Admiral Yonai, reaffirmed Japan’s determination not to become involved in the European war. He said that Japan was determined to act independently and cope with developments as they arose from , the 'war or the general international situation. ( Admiral Yonai added that there were many difficulties to be overcome at home and abroad before Japan could obtain her objectives. This necessitated the maintenance of general mobilization for a long period.
AUSTRALIAN WAR COMMITMENTS
£125,000,000 For First Two Years CANBERRA, -May 2. The total war commitments of Australia for the next financial year would be £79.000,009, bringing the total for the first two years of the war to £125,000.000. said the Federal Treasurer, Mr. Spender, in bis Budget statement. Borrowings from the public for the current financial year are anticipated by Mr. Spender to amount to £50,000,000. He said that the wartime company tax. which was estimated ’to yield £4.250,000, would be 4 per cent, on companies earning 8 per cent., and rising to 00 per cent, on earnings in excess of 22 per cent. The tax on undistributed profits of companies, estimated to yield £450,000, would amount to .1/- in the £. Increased Customs and excise duties, expected to yield £5,300.000, Would include 3d. a gallon on petrol.
MILITARY HOSPITALS
Construction In Australia CANBERRA, May 2. The War Cabinet has decided to build a GOO-bed military hospital of the permanent type in the suburb of Concord, near Sydney. A similar hospital is being built in the suburb of Heidelberg, near Melbourne. It is expected that these hospitals will provide fully for repatriation needs after the war. The existing military hospitals are already- filled witli casualties from the last war.
