UNIFORMED STUDENTS RECEIVE DEGREES

Wartime Capping Ceremony VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, at the \ ictoria University College capping ceremony in the Wellington Town Hall last night, many graduates came to receive their degrees in military and Air Force uniforms instead of tlie traditional academic cap and gown. W.hen they mounted Hie dais the uniformed students were clapped and cheered by their fellowuudergraduates. . The deput v-chairman of the ' ictoria College Council, Mr. T. Forsyth, said (hat the war had unfortunately affected the numbers of students, as it had affected all classes of Dominion activities. In 1939 there were 1132 students, in 1940 only 1050. The college had also lost a number of tlie staff. They were, however, proud of those who had enlisted and wished them the best of luck and a safe return. The Town Hall was well filled for the occasion, not only students but many relatives and friends being piesent. The graduands entered tlie hall in stately procession. Tlie women wore evening frocks under their trenchers and gowns, and these and tlie silks of their hoods lent vivid colour to the scene. Here and there students in military khaki or Air Force blue contrasted with tlie academic dress of their companions. In hoods and gowns, many wearing the spectacular regalia of high University degrees, the vice-chancellor and members of the college council and staff mounted the rostrum and took then seats. The entire assembly stood tor the singing of the Latin “Gaudeamus. After a brief address by Professor R. O. McGechan, the vice-chancellor, Str Thomas Hunter, conferred the degrees. The graduands filed up on to the dais, shook hands with the vice-chancellor and received the scrolls certifying their graduation. The brief ceremony was followed by the Victoria College song and the procession then filed out again in as fornurl a manner as it had entered. The undergraduates were quiet and orderly, the rowdy scenes which in former years were a capping-day tradition being wholly absent.
