AUCKLAND WEST SEAT
Liberal Party Not To Contest Election (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 2. The by-election to HU tlie vacant seat in Auckland West, created by the death of Mr. Savage, will not be contested by tlie New Zealand Liberal Barty, and tiie nomination of its official candidate. Mr. .1. B. Kennedy, will be withdrawn. This decision was reached Jy tlie Auckland executive at a meeting tonight. Tlie executive's reasons for this decision were explained in an official statement detailing resolutions adopted by tlie executive. The first held that New Zealand’s first duty was to give Britain her maximum support in the war and the Government was urged to discharge its full responsibility by positive efforts and by abstaining from contentious domestic legislation that would provoke dissension while tlie Empire is at war. It was also resolved that with n view to essisting the Government in its task all political parties should be urged to observe a wartime truce in mere domestic issues and concentrate on ithe nation’s war sacrifice.
