ITALY HELD TO BE NOT NEUTRAL
Reply To References By Mr. Menzies ROME, April 80. '•JIr. Menzies must bring his ideas up to date,” says the “Giomale d'ltalia” in condemning references by Mr. Menzies to Italy as a neutral country. "Italy is not neutral,’' says the newspaper. "She is allied to Germany, has her own interests to ■ defend, and is reconstructed and organized to defend them vigorously. Italy is determined to light for her liberty in the Mediterranean.” Tlie friendship between the Australian people and Italians, based on mutual respect, was referred to by Mr. Menzies in a speech on Monday. The whole of Australia. was fit war with Germany, the Prime Minister continued, because Australia was a British nation. This was one of the reasons why they wore waging war with Germany. The other reason was that Australia loved freedom and were willing to light for it. Mr. Menzies said he felt confident that Australia would have the sympathy of Italians in her struggle.
