Taxing Of War Profits
(From “The Dominion,” May 3, 1915.) The “Daily Telegraph,” London, says it is believed that the British Government intends to tax the increased profits ot manufacturers of war materials, the tax to be based on the average earnings ot two or three ante-war years.
In reply to an inquiry about the prospects of the ont harvest in New Zealand and about whether the available supplies would suffice for tlie country's requirements. the Prime Minister. Mr. Massey, said that there was likely to 'be a shortage this year. (Motor-car agents, with a view to selling more cars, suggested that ears be bought—there were no petrol restrictions—for hauling, instead of feeding horses with expensive oats.)
