i • Shortage Of Oranges In Wanganui BANANAS PLENTIFUL Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, May 1. Oranges are in short supply in 'Wanganui, and few shops have adequate stocks. The 'position is expected to improve toward the end of the week, when fresh supplies of island oranges are promised. The cessation of the Jamaica supply, which had been available since Christmas, was said to be partlj' responsible for the shortage, shipments, having been irregular because of the war. Bctail shops are selling picked over fruit from the last consignment from the West Indies, which are being sold in limited quantities at the Government fixed prices. The retail price is from 3d. to 4d. each. A consignment of 28,060 cases of islund fruit is expected to reach New Zealand at the weekend, and Wanganui supplies should improve. The Wanganui Fruit Ketailers’ Association is to meet shortly to discuss the orange situation, the condition of the fruit and the fixed price, dissatisfaction being said to exist in the trade. Bananas are in plentiful supply in Wanganui.
