Johnsonville The few pens of prime heavyweight bullocks forward tit the sale conducted in Johnsonville yesterday met with good competition, though prices showed little alteration on those of last week. Medium and lightweight cattle were easier by 5/- a head; extra prime heifers were 5/- a head firmer than last week, selling readily; and medium-weight cows met with no alteration. The Denning of wethers was comprised chiefly of heavyweights, with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Extra prime heavyweight wethers met with a ready sale, prices being slightly firmer on those ruling last week. There was no alteration for the light and mediumweight sorts. Extra prime heavyweight ewes were firm on last week’s prices, though medium-weights and plain were slightly easier. All classes of lambs met with a steady sale. Burnside (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 1. An entry of 325 fat cattle was forward at the Burnside sale today, including a few pens of prime sorts. The sale opened at late rates, and continued without alteration, to the finish. Extra prime bullocks made to £lB/12/G, prime £l5 12/6 to £l7/2/6, medium £ll/7/6 to £l3/12/6, light from £B/2/6; extra prime cows and heifers to £ll/17/6, prime £8 17/6 to £9/12/6, medium £6/17/6 to £7 17/6, light from £4/7/6.

The store cattle were not an attractive lot, but a few pens of three and fouryear steers brought to £lO/14/-. A medium entry of 1700 fat sheep was forward, together with a few trucks of prime wethers and other sheep of medium to light descriptions. Extra prime heavy wetheys made to 38/-, prime 32/- to 33/6, medium 27/- to 29/6, light from 22/-; extra prime ewes to 27/6. prime 22/- to 25/-, medium 18/- to 19/6, light from 13/-. A large offering of fat lambs of only fair quality was forward, but the demand was keen and prices were well maintained. Heavy butchers’ lambs made to 37/-, prime 28/- to 31/-, medium 24/- to 26/9, light from 20/-. Up to £6/5/- was made for heavy baconers in a market which was not generally up to late rates. Stortford Lodge Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, May 1. Good-conditioned lambs and wethers again rose in value at the Stortford Lodge sale today, when the market was confident for an offering of -1000 head. Fat wethers brought 24/7, with very forward pens from 22/5 to 22/10; good store to forward ewes 19/9: well-grown woolly wether lambs in extra forward condition, including a percentage killable, 21/10 — the highest price of the season; very forward wether lambs from 18/6 to 19/2, medium-grown sorts in good handling order 17/-. others in lighter order from 14/- to 16/-, small and light to 12/6. The better sorts of the aged fattening ewes brought from 12/- to 13/-, will) others making to 10/-. Beef met with a good inquiry, quality being more noticeable than at the recent sales. Ox beef prices ranged from £B/5/to £9/10/-. to average 32/- a 1001 b. One draft of cows, al] in splendid order, rang'.ed from £B/5/- to £B/17/6. The mediumquality cow pens brought from £6/17/6 to £7/17/6, and the light sorts from £4/17/6 to £6.

An average yarding of fat sheep, a moderate one of store sheep and pigs, and a good entry of vealers and store cattle were offered at the Wanganui stock sales today. week's rales. A total clearance was effected under the hammer. Prices were: — Flit sheep: Two-tooth wethers, heavy 24/0 to 25/3, light 22/-; two-tooth b.f. wethers. 24/3: ewes, good. 16/6 to 18/-: light and unfinished. 12/6 to 14/6: S.LI. ewes, light, 13/-; lambs, 20/- to 23/-. Store sheep: Account C. 11. Pahiatua Dominion Special Service. PAHIATUA, May 1. A moderate yarding of sheep, mostly lambs, was offered to a large attendance of buyers at the sale conducted in Pahiatusi today. The sheep prices were on n par with those of the previous week. Dairy cows showing quality, but a bit low in condition, were keenly sought and weaner Jersey heifers appreciated a little in value. Prices are:— Sheep: W.W. lambs, good; 16/3 to 15/-, medium 13/- to 11/10; ewe lambs, medium, 13/9 to 9/-; fat wethers, 24/-; backward ewes, 15/9; fat ewes. 14/-. Cattle: Dairy cows, £9 to £7/7/-; weaner Jersey heifers, £4/4/- Io £4 : fat heifers, £5. Pigs: Weaner. 10/6.

Values At Yesterday’s Sales

Bidding was keen for a large pig offering and values were very firni, specially for prime sorts. Choppers niade £2/15/to £B/1/-; heavy baconers £4/4/- to £4 16/-. medium £3/13/- to £4. light £3/5/to £3/17/-; heavy porkers £2/12/- to £3, medium £2/4/- to £2/10/-, light £l/18/to £2/2/-, unfinished £l/8/- to £l/17/-; stores £1 to £l/6/-; slips 13/- to 16/-; weaners 6/- to 17/6. Baconers averaged 61d. to a pound, and porkers 6jd. to 6Jd. Selling under- keen competition, a big sheep yarding maintained full late rales.' Extra heavy prime wethers made 29/6 to 31/-. heavy 27/6 to 29/6, medium 26/to 27/6, light 24/- to 26/-; extra heavy prime young maiden ewes 23/- to 24/9, heavy 21/- to 23/-, medium 19/- to 21/-, light 10/- to 18/6, unfinished 5/—to 18/9. A full lamb yarding sold freely at late rates.. Extra heavy prime lambs made 28/6 to 30/3, heavy 25/- to 28/3, medium 23/- to 24/9. light 20/- to 22/9. unfinished 8/- to 19/-.

Addington (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. The Addington market today was strong, in the sections for fat sheep, fat lambs, and prime fat cattle. Fat sheep of good quality showed an increase of from 2/- to 2/6 a head, A good yarding of fat cattle sold at prices which were dearer than last week by 1/6 a 1001 b. About 2000 more store sheep than usual were entered. The sale was a shade weaker, except for the best, sound-mouthed sorts. With an oversupply of old ewes, this class was inclined to ease as the sale progressed. Outstanding English Leicester-Romney ewe lambs sold at 23/5, with.good rape sorts at 18/1 to 20/-; and average lambs at 11/6 to 15/6, with rough sorts at 6/-. One of the best sales of two-tooths was the 19/9 paid for a truck lot. Other pens of better-class two-tootbs, fine woolled, sold at 17/6. A station line of 250 sound-mouthed ewes sold at from 13/6 to 14/-. The fat lamb sale, on the increased export schedule of 9d. a pound for 361 b. lambs or under, was the best for some time. Exporters forced the pace, and butchers had difficulty in filling their requirements. Butchers’ sorts sold .at an advance on the schedule rates, and exporters paid a shade more in some cases. The penning of fat sheep was slightly smaller than usual, comprising 5000 head. The quality of the animals, however, was the best for some time. Prime, heavy wethers forward from the Chatham. Islands, fattened locally, and Romneycross Chatham wethers of show standard brought up to 39/1. The average price for a truck-lot of 56 wethers was 35/-. Tlie market opened at a sharp advance on the recent rates, with good ewes 2/6 a head better, medium, to good wethers at about the same, and heavy wethers 1/6 to 2/- better. Exporters paid up to the advance in the export schedule. Altogether, there was a buoyant market. Best wethers made 32/- to 39/-, good 27/- to 39/-, ordinary sorts 23/- to 26/-; and prime ewes 25/- to 29/-, ordinary 15/to 20/-, freezing to 16/-.

The fat cattle entry was of overflow proportions—62B head. There was a better display of finished cattle. The price improvement continued, today’s prices for the better sorts being up to 15/- better than last week’s. There was little change in the values for medium and rough sorts. Prime steers made £l5 to £19,-with light to medium sorts at £B/15/- to £ll. Good beef made from 36/- to 38/6, with the tops going to 40/- a 1001 b., medium from 32/- to 35/-, and rough down to 27/-. There was an easier sale for porkers, values ranging from 41/6 to 47/6 —an average price a lb. of 7d. to 7}d. The baconer penning was tlie heaviest of the season, but a good sale resulted, heavyweights being the only class to ease in values. The average price a lb. for baconers was 6}d. to 71d. Westfield (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 1. A larger offering of good quality beef at tlie Westfield sale sold readily at very firm late rates. Extra choice ox beef made 36/- a hundred pound, choice and prime 31/- to 35/-, prime cow and heifer beef 29/- to 32/-, and secondary 22/to 28/-. Extra heavy prime steers sold for £l4 to £l5/5/-, heavy £l2/10/- to £l3. medium £ll/10/- to £l2/15/-, light £lo_ to £ll/5/-. unfinished £4/10/- to £9/5/-; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers £9 to £lO/15/-, heavy £8 to to £B/17/6, medium £6/15/- to £7/17/6, light £5 to £6/15/-. unfinished £3 to £5 10/-. Competition was keen for prime vealers in a large calf entry of good quality. Plain unfinished sorts were easier. Runners made £3/10/- to £7/10/-; heavy vealers £4/3/- to £4/15/-, medium £3/9/to £4/2/-. light £3 to £3/9/-, small £2 to £3, smaller 18/- to £2, small and unfinished 15/- to £l/15/-, bobby and rough 5/- to 16/-.
