FUNDS FOR SECOND ECHELON

| Misunderstanding - Apparent i FOR USE ON VOYAGE OR AFTER? Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, May 1. That there was some misunderstanding over recent collections made on behalf of the Hawke’s Bay company in the second echelon was apparent at a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Provincial Patriotic Council in Hastings, when on the one hand it was stated that the money collected was to provide recreational facilities on board troopships, notwithstanding that such provision was being undertaken by the national council, and on the other'hand it was said that the money was for the use of the men when they reached their destination overseas and not while en route. The meeting did not favour a proposal that eacli provincial patriotic council contribute £lOO toward the nucleus of a fund to provide regimental funds for the second -echelon. Criticism of the delay in the distribution of canteen funds was voiced, and it was contended that arrangements could have been made for the advancement of the money required for regimental funds in anticipation of . the profits of canteens. The council decided to favour making a loan of £lOO for the purpose, on the understanding that it be repaid from canteen-fund profits as each distribution is made by the canteen funds board.

Conflict of Appeals?

Referring to the Fighting Services Wei. fare Appeal, Mr. N. Paulsen (Waipukurua) said that possibly the joint Red Cross and St. John Ambulance appeal would conflict with the activities already established by patriotic committees in small country districts. People were told in the first place that there would be only patriotic councils and that all appeals would be made through them so that there would be no overlapping in' appeals. ‘‘We have got to the stage now,” he said, ‘‘when we might just as well toss the regulations overboard, at any rate so far as the smaller country districts are concerned.”
