AWAPUNI GALLOPS

Sleeveless Impresses Dominion Special Service. PALME'RSTOIN IN., May 1. The gallops of most interest were performedl by. horses engaged at the Manawatu and Otaki meetings. With two or three exceptions, the 'chasers andr hurdlers do not measure up favourably with those of former years. Clarion Call -has' come through a satisfactory preparation, and has only to stand up to his work to pay his way. The other class j’umper is Bridegroom, who has given good exhibitions. There are, however, a few that can be classed as possibilities, among -them being Hirangi, Forest Glow, Aurora’s Love, Devon, Old Surrey, and Little Briton. As Bryce Street finished up lame when contesting the steeplechase event at Waverley, he can be written out. On Tuesday morning Race Boy broke a leg while being schooled over the battens, and had to be destroyed. He was an inmate of L. Knapp’s stable. Sleeveless is doing everything right on the tracks, and her prospects of being in the money in early engagements look good. She worked well over seven furlongs, Aurora’s Love joining, in at the five. Without being bustled, they finished their task-in 1.35. Colonel Bogey and Brazil were partners over seven, which occupied 1.37. _ Quadroon will soon be in the right condition to make his presence felt in races. He bowled along in resolute style ov#r a mile —a good working gallop. Luke Wilson deserves luck for the patient manner in which he has persevered with the son of Nigger Minstrel. Clasisfonn went nicely over six furlongs, registering 1.24 J. R. Thomson has his charge well attuned._ There appears to be a good future in store for the daughter of Inflation. Inform (sister to Classform) was accompanied by Shining Hours over half a mile. They finished on terms in 56. It is understood that Inform will have her' first race with the colours up at the Manawatu meeting. Shining Hours' is shaping up nicely, there being a marked improvement in her appearance during the past fortnight. The daughter of Arausio is held on lease by Noel Voitre. Francis Drake ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.9 2-5. Amyas, Leigh, and Little Dorritt went running solidly at the close of four furlongs in a shade over Gay Jean, Mick the Miller, and Luarth, were exercised over six furlongs, run iu 1.26. All continues to go well with Aurora s Star. Under restraint, she left a mile behind in a manner that indicated she is well forward for coming- engagements. There was little between Renascor and Selkirk in a seven-furlong gallop. Without being required to go fast, Don Quex. moved along with freedom over a mile. Forest Glow, Clarion Call, Bridegroom, Bryce Street, Devon, and Little Briton are among the entries for the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting.

Broughton Leads. Although Broughton did not ride a winner d'uriiiig the weekend,, he retains.hiH place as leading jockey with 45 points. B. H. Morris occupies second place with 43 successes, and H. N. Wiggins is third with 40. The scores of the other leading jockeys and apprentice riders now stand as follows: —W. J. Mudford 37, P. Atkins 33, T. Spratt 32, G. R. Tattersail 30 W. F. Ellis 28, G. Cameron 27, R. W. McTavish 26, A. E. Ellis 25, W. Jenkins 24, A, Jenkins 23, L. J. Ellis 23, P. Burgess 23, L. Dulieu 22. C. T. Wilson 22, T. Green 21.
