News And Notes From Town And Country English Counties Society. A cheery social evening and dance was held by the Lower Hutt branch of the English Counties’ Society on Saturday in the Returned Soldiers’ Association elubrooms, and provided a welcome rendezvous for the many guests who attended. Miss Violet Robert? gave songs, and elocutionary items were contributed by Mr. Stewart. Dancing was enjoyed by the guests. Mr. J. K. Hale was master of ceremonies. The committee comprised Mrs. R. Cowie, Mr. and Mrs. E. Lumb, Mr aud Mrs. A. Montgomery, Mr. and Mrs. N, D. Brian, Mrs. E. Lineker, Mrs. M. Weston, aud Miss J. Weston.
Stokes Valley League of Mothers. Mrs. H. F. Lowe presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the April meeting of the Stokes Valley League of Mothers. Mrs. Montgomery gave the thought for the month, “Instead of complaining that roses have .thorns, let us be glad that thorns have roses.”
An excellent programme of music was provided by the choir -of the Petone league under the leadership of Mrs. Millward. Mrs. Miller gave two elocutionary items. Songs were contributed by Mrs. Look and Mrs. Glover and an amusing reading by Mrs. Millward. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. Drama Club’s Report.
At a recent meeting of the Social Service Club of the Wellington College Old Girls’ Association, the annual report of the drama club was presented. Mrs. AV. O. Urquhart presided, over a very good attendance. The following were elected to the drama club :— Misses Pat Innes (secretary), Grace Jensen, Beryl Stewart, and Mrs.. Bruce Cade. The retiring committee were thanked for their splendid work during the year, and members thanked Miss lioma Bitossi for her gift of drama books to the Service Club.
Dance. For Kindergarten. A dance was given on Friday night at the Petone Free Kindergarten by Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Goldsmith, Lower Hutt, in honour of the engagement of their daughter, Miss Lois Goldsmith, to Mr. 11. W. King, also of Lower Hutt. Mr. and Mrs. Goldsmith were assisted by Mrs. Parata Olsen and Mr. David Parata. The dance, which was by invitation, was to aid the kindergarten Mrs. Olsen being president of the committee, and Mrs. Goldsmith vicepresident. Members of the kindergarten committee present included Mrs. A. J. Pascoe, Mrs. H. Morris, and Mrs. J. C. Burns. The supper-tables were gay with bowls of red and deep rose carnations, maidenhair fern and 'iirysanthemums. Joan Malin and Reith Wood gave a Hungarian duo in character, Mrs. Parata Olsen and Mrs. R. G. Millward sang, and Mrs. Craig McKenzie contributed elocutionary items.
