ORANGES SCARCE
Island Shipment Due Soon There is a shortage of oranges in New Zealand. Those at present on sale in retail shops are picked-over fruit from the last consignment from (lie ■West Indies. They are being sold in limited quantities at Government-fixed prices. These prices enable the shopkeeper to sell them at from 3d. to 4d. each. A consignment of 28,000 cases of island oranges is due to arrive in Auckland oranges is expected in Auckland and a portion of these may reach Wellington early next week. Australian oranges, chiefly from South Australia, have lieen allowed to be marketed in New Zealand under permit from the Government. The first of this year’s crop are expected to be made available during the second half of May. These oranges are not sold at auction, but are sold at prices mutually agreed upon by the agents of the producers and the New Zealand Government. '
