STREET LIGHTING
Use Of Sodium Vapour Lamps
Inquiries have been made recently about the Intention of the Wellington municipality as to the future use of the sodium and mercury vapour- lamps, which have been used to illuminate the routes to and from the Centennial Exhibition during the last six mouths. The hope has been expressed that, the lamps will’ remain aS at present,' as they have given the best form of street lighting yet used in Wellington. The general manager of tlie electricity department, Mr. M. Cable, stated yesterday that it was certain that tire lamps, which were ex-pensive, would be removed from ail of the less important thoroughfares in which they had -been erected, because better use could be made of them in busier city highways. Certain of the streets iu which the lamps had been erected were quiet residential thoroughfares that hardly called for brilliant night illumination. In such cases the lamps would be dismounted, and would be used in other parts of the city, notably, for example, in Bowen Street, and its now extension, more generally known as the western access road.
For Evans Bay Road, Ruahine Street and Crawford Road, a decision had not yet been made whether or not the vapour lamps would remain; but tbe department’s idea was to make such use of the lamps as would benefit the greatest number of people.
