1939 ROYAL SHOW
Invercargill’s Success
"Invercargill can always be relied oh to stage a good show. There, to a greater extent than in most parts of New Zealand, you see town and country getting together in a great festival of the laud,” states the annual report of the president, Mr. L. J. Wild, of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, commenting on the 1939 Royal Show, held in Invercargill. “Considering the special difficulty of the times, the support from northern exhibitors was very gratifying, though the bill for interisland freight was less than usual,” the report adds. . “Certain sections, such as horses and dairy cattle, are always very strong at a Southland Royal. Sheep in nearly all sections were good on this occasion, but pigs were weak. It appears that the pig Clubs and councils have not been so active in the south, or that the southern farmer can afford not to be bothered with pigs. In either case perhaps it is a pity for bacon production is at present an urgent requirement for war purposes.” Regret at the delay in issuing medals won at the last Royal Show, and also in the'forwarding of trophies requested by successful exhibitors, is expressed in the report of the secretary, Mr. R. AlcCay. Considerable difficulty had been experienced because the Government had commandeered all silversmiths and engravers for war orders, consequently the society's medals ami cups had been held up. It was hoped to have these delivered within the next few weeks.
The society’s annual general meeting will be held in Wellington on June 28. The annual conference opens on the afternoon of the previous day.
