PRICE OF APPLES
Retailers’ Complaint Of Increase Retailers in Wellington express alarm at the rise in the priee of apples, citing the priee of 17/- a 40-pouud case, which Cox’s Orange brought on the market yesterday. They contend that this particular variety should have been placed on the market a month ago and in greater quantity, instead of in limited lots. It was stated tiiat there were large quantities of apples in storage all over the country, but that for some reason not made public these were being held. The only result would be to increase the priee. Among the apples held in store, it was stated, there was a good proportion of extra fancy, which would only deteriorate if the Department of Internal Marketing continued to hold them. As things were apples would be sixpence a pound. The department was still advertising cheap apples, but retailers could not quote case lots of Jonathans, for instance, at under 7/6. There bad been no counter-statement to the previously advertised price of 5/6 a case lot. Pears were also dear, bringing 15/a case for eating Winter Cole yester- ■ day and 17/- the day before. Cooking pears were 10/- to 12/01 a threequarter bushel box, making the retail price at least 6d. a pound. Cooking apples were bringing 6/2 a case, which made it impossible to sell at less than 8/2. One retailer said that the Ballarats, which he bought at as extra fancy, he was almost ashamed to sell as such.
