HAWERA NOTES
Spectacular Jumping Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, April 30. A large, crowd of spectators was treated to some spectacular jumping at Hawera this morning, when seven Egnuont Steeplechase candidates -were schooled over country, and severer hurdlers jumped smaller fences. \\ itn a big majority of visiting horses already at head-quarters, sonic interesling galloping also took place, both the outside of the course proper 'and the plough being iu first-rate order. On the Course Proper. FJamiberge (Dye) finished better than Judgment (Graham), to he clear at the end of five .fiurlougs in 1.5. ' A smart effort was credited to oea Link (Dye), •who shaded City . Song (Graham) at the conclusion of a similar distance iu 1.3 4-5. Sea Link worked pleasingly, while City Song also worked pleasingly, and -also shaped creditably, as she is not a good track galloper. . Gay Seton (Dye) ran the same distance in 1.4 1-5. No fault can be found with his condition. Devon (Anderson) traversed six furlongs at three-quarter pace. He looks improved by his outing at Waverley. His stablemate, Little Briton (Anderson) encompassed a mile at a working gallop, running the last four furlongs in 58. The Little England gelding appears to be more solid than at. the same stage last season.
Galteemone and Piastre were . companions over seven furlongs, getting to the end of the last five in 1.74. . Gold Blaze (Dye) ran half a mile in o 0
3-5. Gold Grip (.MaDon-ald). and Chiltern (McKenzie) were not hurried to traverse half a mile in 54. ‘ . Martene (McDonald) sprinted three furlongs smartly in 371. The Martarrna gelding derived much benefit from his first outing at Wave-rley. . . Alunga (Vaughan), who is in great order at present, impressed when running half a mile in 50 i. He should be hard to dispose of in this Eigmont engagements. On the Plough. Noti-u-m (Cole) held the measure of Verey Lights (Sexton) throughout six furlongs in 1.18 3-5, after requiring o 3 for the first half-mile. Fiancee (Ryan) reeled off bailit a mile in 50j. , , Hurdlers School. War Lap (Toki), First Chapter (Savage), and Streamline (Ridgway) finished, in tliait order ait the completion of two rounds on the hurdle track, six fences in all. K-aiiwaka (A. Jenkins) set off with bhieni, but was required to jump only three obstacles. War Lap gave the best display, though he kept up to his task all the way. First Chapter hit several fences hard, which took a lot «f sting out of him. Streamline drifted to the rear early, and though he jumped well, his ebndition suggests that he wi-L require a fair amount of racing yet before he is seen at his best. Kaiwaka -was given an. easy lesson, and> the halflbrother to. Clarion Call should have possibilities in the department. He is engaged in the hurdle event on the second day at Esmont. Hunting Lore (Jarvis) is also -to compete on the second day. He gave a safe exhibition over three hurdles, though he got in fairly close to the last one. Blue Tiger (Shield) impressed more than Ruling 'Star (Hayes) in a bout over six hurdles. Blue Tiger gave a fine display, and he is rapidly approaching his best. Steeples Candidates. Great interest was evinced when Clarion Call (A. Jenkins), One Whetu (Albrey), En Tour (Tito), Brigadore (Savage), Disturbed (Mcßae), Flashlight (Ridgway), and Lady Stella (Grindlay), set out to jump steeplechase country,, nine fences altogether. Commencing half-way up the straight, Clarion Call and One whetu led over the stand double from Flashlight and Brigadore, Disturbed and En Tour, with Lady Stella about la lengths in the rear. Brigadore’s jockey had a “life” at the third brush fence, and at the next brush Clarion Call outjumped One Whetu to assume sole charge for the rest of the journey, and he cleared the stand double the second time clear of One Whetu and Brigadore, together, with little separating En Tour, Flashlight, and Disturbed, and Lady Stella having an easy lesson a good way behind. Clarion Call was responsible for an excellent exhibition, and he promises to take a lot of beating in the steeplechase on Thursday. One Whetu shaped pleasingly for a novice, and, if ho remains sound, the Sandstar gelding should have decided, prospects in his new role. He is an ideal type of jumper, possessed of more pace than the average. Flashlight overreached at one fence and sustained a severe cut on a front tendon, which may prevent him from competing at Egmont. Except for his slight blemish at the third obstacle, Brigadore jumped well, while En Tour, who gave his usual polished display, was not bustled at any stage of the journey. Disturbed made no mistakes, and Lady Stella cleared every fence in effortless style and gained numerous admirers. Riding engagements announced include: V. Dye, Viracious, Flamberge, Sea Link, Gay Seton; A. Jenkins, Clarion Call, Judgment; O. P. Shield, Blue Tiger; J. H. Mcßae, Disturbed; R. W. Savage, Brigadore; T. Tito, En Tour; N.
