HIGHER LIVING COSTS
Tramway Workers Seek Wage Increase QUESTION FOR COURI (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 29, A claim by tbe Auckland Tramway and Omnibus Employees’ Union for an increase of 8 per cent, on tbe wage rates set out in the existing award to meet increasing costs of living was discussed by representative* of tbe union, supported by representatives of the 1 ederation of Labour, at a meeting o. Auckland Transport Board. The clause under which tne claim being made provides that if the cost living in Auckland is increased or decreased by a full a per e-ent. or more as compared with the cost of Im fe at tbe commencement of the agreemcn , then either party may require a revision to be made in the rater; of Tbe board decided that the clan should be referred to the Court of Arbi ration for interpretation, and if the Court should not uphold the claim fo 8 per cent., then it should be asked to declare the increase to which the men were entitled under tbe clause. Tbe effect of tbe board s decision will be that for tbe first time since the economic changes caused by tbe enactment of the Labour Government legislation and the outbreak of hostilities the Arbitration Court will be asked to assess any increase in the cost of living in relation to wages. The clause under which the claim is made provides that proof of a rise or decrease can be given either through a pronouncement of the Arbitration Court or through the official records of tbe Government Statistician.
