SOUTH AFRICAN WOOL
Prices Quoted In Sterling INQUIRY BY MINISTER A Press Association message published in the Press a week ago stated: “At the South African wool sales 64’s averaged 33|d. a lb. Competition was very keen with England and France the principal buyers.” . The Minister of Marketing, Mr. Nash, has now received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, London, in reply 'to his inquiry about the above statement:—"South Africa price clean basis not greasy. Average price realized greasy this season to end of March llfd., and month of March average 114 d. Informed 64’s yield 45 to 55 per cent.” The Minister stated that these prices are quoted in sterling, and tihe equivalent in New Zealand currency would be from 144 d. to As the bulk of South African wool is fine Merino (94 per cent, as against 2 per cent, in New Zealand) the New Zealand overall price of 12Jd. a lb. for mainly crossbred wool compares very favourably with the South African realizations on an open market in which all countries were competing.
