EXAMPLE AND INSPIRATION

Saturday’s parade of the troops of the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was both an example and an inspiration for the thousands of eligible young men who were mixed with the throng of onlookers who lined the streets along the loute. It was impossible not to be impressed by the manly appearance of the uniformed ranks as, bronzed and radiating health and vigour, they swung along with disciplined stride and carriage. It was a striking and stirring example of the beneficial effects of camp life, tiaining, and vigorous exercise upon both mind and body. In their act of response to the call for service, and in their training, something of infinite value had been added to their manhood. This personal transformation should be an inspiration to the thousands of young men who are hanging back for one reason or another to come forward and do likewise for the glory of their country and their own manhood. Frequent appeals have been made during the recruiting campaign, but no appeal could be more eloquent and appealing, or should be more irresistible than the example and appearance of those marching battalions of young men who paraded the streets on Saturday. It is to be sincerely hoped that it will have the desired effect.
