MAYOR’S CRITICISM

Lack Of Public Spirit Citizens who criticize the civic efforts of others were taken to task last night at the Petone Borough Council meeting by the mayor, Mr. G. London. The improvement of the area in front of tbe new grandstand at the Recreation Ground was being dis cussed; at present it is neither grassed nor paved and after rain it is muddy. The mayor said he agreed with Cr. J. R. Gaynor that meantime the area should be grasSed. On Saltirday he had had the experience of listening to some responsible citizen whose only object seemed to be lo condemn the grandstand they had Io pay for. It was Ihe same with the Exhibition. Slid) people did little or nothing themselves, but as-soon as they saw Ihe endeavour of others taking shape they could uot condemn it quickly enough. They went to the Reereatiou Ground to witness sport, but did uot seem to have the sporting spirit. Ou Saturday Some people were glorifying in the fact that because it .was a limtlay llrere were few people using the stand. ’Cr. J. Huggati suggested asphalting the area: it had been stated that no more money would be spent on tbe ground during the war. Tbe mayor: No one said that. It was decided to grass the area and form a pathway of rotten rock. Cr. A. M. Maefarlane suggested duckboards on (he concrete floors of the dressing rooms; he said these Hours were 100 cold for players lo stand on. He had experienced this bimself. The mayor: I don’t want to be per sonal, but age uiusl be overtaking you if you feel the cold on a gymnasium floor after a football match. Cr. E. N. Campbell said that it was not beneficial for players lo have to stand on concrete floors. Cr. J. C. Burns: The grandstand is not a convalescent home. No action was decided upon in this respect.
