JUMPING FORM

Sidelights From Waverley NOTES AND COMMENTS Davilia Above The Average

(By

The Watcher.)

Lustral hit a fence very hard in the running of the Waverley Steeplechase and was lame on pulling up. He had run a sound race, and was well in the picture when the incident happened. T. George has taken Lustral on to Egmont though he may not recover sufficiently to be able to run. Never Likely.

Disturbed, who has the habit of tailin'’ off in his hurdle races, ran similarly in the Waverley steeplechase and was always well back.

Brigadore May Improve. Brigadore is a good class jumper when at his best. He ran a patchy race in the hurdles at Waverley, but was running on at the right end, and he may improve for Egmont this week.

Above the Average. Davilia finished from several places back to win on Saturday, and although this is only her second success, it will not be her last, as she appears much above the average.

Related to Statuette. Elyiug Vixen, who was well backed m the maiden race at Waverley and lost her chance by failing to begin, is a three-year-old filly by Foxbridge from Flying Juliet, by Romeo-Penella, by Penury. Penella was half sister to the brilliant mare Statuette.

Overdue. . , Hunting Lore has now run eight successive minor placings, six of them m second place.

Won Well. „ . , Hirangi the Waverley hurdle winner belongs to a jumping family. He is by Centrepiece from Cinnamon, dam also of Pahu, Pango, and Miss Pango. Hirangi won very impressively.

Kaiwaka. Kaiwaka’s form for a fresh horse was outstanding on Saturday, though he was fortunate that Alunga lost so much early ground. Kaiwaka is the type to make good as a jumper, and he has been entered for the hurdle race on the second day at Egmont.

His First Win. Far East, the hurdle winner at South Canterbury on Saturday, had never previously been successful in any race. He was for a time last season in the stable of A. Goodman at Trentham, and did some jumping, Goodman bringing him back from the Nelson-Marlborough circuit just 12 months ago. He was unplaced in the Pukebou hurdles at Otaki last June, and twice over hurdles at Trentham in July. Goodman then returned him to big owners, and he only

resumed racing on the West Coast last month. Far East is only a young horse, rising six, and looks a good type foe a jumper. His sire, Hoturoa, is by Panmure, who sired several good jumpers, out of Ortygia, by Birkenhead-Arethusa, by Dreadnought. Hoturoa was a half brother to Dionysius, a very promising jumper a few years ago in the stable of F. D. Jones, and who met with a tatal mishap in a hurdle race at liiccarton. Far East’s dam is a mare by Gay Spark. Aussie Ka.

Last winter Aussie Ba staged a meteoric rise in the ranks of the hurdlers and finally beat all but Padishah in the Grand National. In his only two starts since he was unplaced at the Combined Hunts meeting at New Plymouth in the Duke of Gloucester Cup and in the Glen Hurdles at Trentham in October. His great finishing run into fourth place at the end of the running in the Waverley Cup on Saturday suggests that be is well forward for immediate jumping events, one of which is the Great Northern Hurdles.

In Form Again. Mataroa, apart from his second placing at Woodville in February, has not raced up to expectations, but apparently he likes the sting well out of the going, and he scored well in the Besley Memorial at "Waverley. Mataroa stays well, and now that he has struck form he should go on with it.

Bryce Street Out. The breakdown of Bryce Street during the running of the Waverley Steeplechase removes a prominent cross country horse very early in the season, but it was fortunate, seeing that he would not stand, that he went in a comparatively minor event. Bryce Street was travelling well at the time and promised to take a hand in the decision.

An Improvement. Young Charles disappointed his party at Hawke’s Bay, but on the easier going at Waverley he ran two excellent races and with a better passage at his second start he may have won a double. As the tracks will be easier from now on Young Charles should not be long in getting some more money.

Successful Operation. The chief stipendiary steward, Mr. T. H. C. Gomer, has made a good recovery from the operation he underwent three weeks ago and was able to leave hospital on Thursday. It may be a week or two before Mr. Gomer is able to resume his official duties, though he probably will be officiating at some of the early winter meetings. Broke the Ice.

Density’s win on Saturday was her first success at Washdyke, though she had been placed in each of her previous starts there.

Promising Hunter Lost. An accident with fatal consequences for Tetahinga while being qualified on Saturday with the hunt for jumping events has removed one of the most promising recruits to the winter sport in the Auckland province. Tetahinga was secured only recently by the Hon. Eliot R. Davis and Mr. 0. Nicholson to race as a jumper, but as lately as Saturday morning he surprised by going stride for stride with Jack Tar in the last half of a mile gallop by the latter horse. When schooled privately he had never made a mistake. He was an acceptor for the Papakura Hurdles at the Franklin meeting on Saturday. Tetahinga did not fall on the occasion

of his fourth and last appearance with the hunt. Getting too close in to a jump he hit a stake at the side of the obstacle with a foreleg, which was broken. He was being ridden by P. Mcllroy.

Break With Trainer. Racing association between Mr. Alan Cooper, Australia’s most spectacular horse owner, and IV. J. Shean, one oi Brisbane's most respected trainers, was terminated this month. While he trained horses for Mr. Cooper in Brisbane, Shean was signally successful. He won the Doomben Newmarket and Ascot Handicap last year with Micawber, and also prepared Gold Salute when he won the Burwood Handicap at Caulfield. It was thought that Shean would become private trainer for Mr. Cooper at Mr. Cooper's stud at Scone. He would not leave Brisbane, however. “We have parted all right,” said Shean. “Mr. Cooper ilew back to Sydney, and I have none of his horses in my stable now.” Shean said that Mr. Cooper went to Brisbane to see Man's Pal, whom he had leased with the option of purchase, do a trial gallop with Whyenbah. Dhe youngster was beaten by a couple ot lengths by a more experienced companion. Shean thought-it a good trial, but MrCooper appeared to be dissatisfied. He found many faults, and Shean took the remarks as a personal reflection, and they decided to part.

J. Fryer Doing Well. The Caulfield trainer J. Fryer and the jockey N. Creighton are having a great run of luck at present. At the Williamstown meeting at Mentone a fortnight ago they won a double with Home Secretary and Pantoon, and went close to completing a treble, as another of his team, Manurere, finished second in another race. One of Fryer’s winners was the Musketoon gelding, Pantoon, who followed up that good form by winning the Belhaven Handicap over a mile and a quarter at Ascot three days later. Pantoon has good form to his credit, and the manner m which he defeated the opposition in the Belhaven Handicap suggests that many more wins will come his way.
