An interesting historical find of an old Maori canoe in a fair state of preservation -was made recently at Lake Haupirl, Kopara, by Mr. A. Birchfield. Burn. The canoe was embedded in mud at the edge of the lake and was retrieved without difficulty. Its age is unknown. It is in one piece, and is about 18ft. long and 18in. wide, having been hewn out: of a white pine tree. Evidences of the Maori occupation of this area have been found for some years.
