LONDON, March 28. '['he Madrid correspondent ot the British United Press savs that the white flag was hoisted by the Press Department this morning. The nationalist flag is flying over the telephone building. Later white flags flew all over the city- The commander-in-chief. Colonel Casado. has left his headquarters where it is stated that the central army under the orders of its chief, Colonel Pradas, has surrendered. It is believed that General Franco himself will enter the city on April 1. Throughout the night republican troops evacuated their trenches and positions and streamed through the city. All fronts are deserted today.

The streets are full of republican soldiers who abandoned their trenches and weapons. Ihe people are using the Fascist salute. The shops are refusing republican banknotes. The city's exits are crowded with fugitives. Madrid is now awaiting the coming of the nationalist troops. The guards are no longer able to keep the people from the public buildings. The population is thronging the streets and demonstrating in favour of General Franco. The police are not interfering.
