The preliminary figures for the 1938 Census show' Russia’s population to be 170,120,000, an increase of 23,013,000 since 1926.
Richard Hough, of Princeton, U.S.A., swam 200 yards breaststroke in 2min. 22sec. —a world record. The previous record, 2inin. 22}sec., was established by K. Kasley (U.S.A.) in 1936.
The death is reported from London of Sir Basil Thomson, Director of the British Intelligence Service from 1919 to 1921, aged 1 77.
Mr. Edward Anthony Strauss, National Labour member in the House of Commons for North Southwark, is dead. He was 76 years old.
