TAX INCREASES FORECAST

4 Australia’s Rising Expenditure ADDITIONS TO THE DEFENCE VOTE SYDNEY, March 27. General increases in Federal taxation in the next Budget are forecast by the Treasurer, Mr. Casey. He said that he had already made two or three attempts to frame the Budget, and had directed the Government’s attention to the steadily rising costs in essential expenditure.

“Defence expenditure is going up hand over fist, and the limit has not yet been reached,” Mr. Casey said. “In the last few days about £1,350,000 has been added to the defence vote, and other expenses, such as that for a permanent force, are still to come. Other costs, apart from what we can expect from national insurance, are also rising.” He added that there was a limit to which taxation, both direct and indirect, could go, if industry were not to be stifled, and the cost of living rise.

It is learned that defence spending in the three-year programme would be likely to reach £75,000,000 instead of the original estimate of £63,000,000.
