GOLF COMPETITIONS

Mornington Club The official opening of the winter season was held on Sunday, ideal playing conditions prevailing for the competitions that were played, more than 120 members and friends being present. The club’s president, Mr. J. D. Sievwright, in declaring the season open, welcomed the visitors from Manor Park, Shandon, Miramar, and Athletic Park clubs. The standard of play was particularly good and the trophies were well distributed. The mixed Canadian foursome was won by Mrs. D. B. Stratmore and C. B. Eversleigh with a card of 72-12-60, after a play-off with Mrs. Phillips and T. McWhirter, 73-13-60. Other good scores were Mrs. Wells and H. J. Shanks, 72-11-61; Miss Darby and G. Thompson, 83-21-62; Mrs. Sly and R. T. McEUigott, 79-15-64; Mrs. Barrett and P. Satherly, 78-12-66. The Canadian foursome for ujen without partners resulted in a tie between C. Wheeler and J. Webber, 72-7-65, J. Oarswell and J. Clements, 77-12-65, and T. O’Kelly and F. Laycock, 77-12-65; another good card was that of W. Charles and W. H. Kelly, 75-9-66. The nine-holes bogey over the first nine holes for women was won by Miss Maudsley (Athletic Park), 2 up, and over the second nine holes Mrs. Phillips (Mornington) was the winner with a card of 2 down. F. A. Wells won the men's bogey over the first nine holes with a card of 3 up. other good scores beingL. Cocker, A. McLean and J. Bowness, each 2 up,. Over the last nine holes, C. Myers was an easy winner with 4 up, his medal score being 33 for the nine; G. Thompson, 2 up, had the next best card. The stableford bogey was won by E. J. Arrows with 37 points, D. B. Stratmore being next with 34 points. Judgeford Ladies’ Club A medal round played by members of the Judgeford Ladies’ Golf Club on Sunday resulted in a draw between Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Lawlor with a net 62, Mrs. Phillips winning on a toss. A bogey round will be played next Sunday. The draw' will bo advertised later in the week.

Initial Matches Of 1939 Season The initial "get-together” game of gulf for the 1939 season for the 'General Motors Shield, which is competed for every month by the wholesale motor traders, oil companies, and tyre companies, was held at the Miramar golf links last week. Conditions were ideal for golf, with the result that some excellent cards Iwere returned, the winners of the shield for the month being the Shell Oil Company, and the Vacuum Oil Company, Who tied tor first place with an aggregate of 139 [mints. The next best score was the Atlantic Union Oil Company's’ team, with 137 points, followed by the Texas Vil Company with 130 points. The results of the match play for the shield are;— A. R.
