Substantial Rise In Price Of Eggs A substantial rise in the retail price of eggs was reported in Wellington yesterday. The market was said to be very firm, and prices likely to go higher. Specials are quoted at 2/6 a dozen, A grade at 2/4, and B grade at 2/-. Current prices of fruit, vegetables and provisions are:— Fruit and Vegetables. Fruit. —Pears, Winter Cole, 4/6 to 6/-; cookers, 5/ -to 6/6; Keiffers, 7/- to 7/6; quinces, 4/6 to 8/9; apples, Delicious, 5/to 7/-; Jonathan, 5/- to 7/6; Coxs, 6/to 8/6; cookers, 5/- to 8/6; passionfruit, 6/- to 7/-; nectarines, 7/- to 8/-; peaches, 5/- to 7/-; strawberries, punnet, 1/4; tomatoes, 3/- to 4/-. Vegetables.—Cabbages, caiseis, 2/- to 2/6; swedes, 2/ -to 3/-: marrows, 2/to 4/-; pumpkins, 4/6 ; cauliflowers, 4/to 9/-; lettuce, 3/- to 5/6; silver beet, 2/-; parsnips, 6/- to 8/-; spinach, 6/-; beans, 6/- to 14/-; carrots, 6/- to 7/-; peas, sacks, 14/- to 19/; caulifliowers, 7/to 10/9 ; swedes, 3/6 to 4/-; pumpkins, 6/to 8/-; pineapples, 9/-; cabbages, 2/- to 3/-; potatoes, 10/- to 13/-: carrots, a dozen bunches, 5/- to 6/-; beetroot, 3/-, parsnips, 4/- to 6/-; turnips, 1/6 to 2/6; watermelons, a dozen. The following quotations by the Wellington Master Grocers' Association apply to Wellington city and suburbs only, for in country districts prices will probably be slightly affected by freights:— Jam: Small tins. to 1/-: 21b. tins, 1/3 to 2/-. Honey: Bulk, 9d. to lOd. a lb.; cartons, first grade, 1/2: 21b. cartons. 2/2. Sugar: 3}d. a lb. Flour: 51b. a 1/; 251 b. pap_er bags, 4/2 to 4/4; 251 b. calico bags, 4/5 to 4/6. Bread: Fixed prices, lid. for 41b. loaf; 5Jd. for 21b. loaf. This applies to Wellington city, Eastbourne. Lower Hutt and Petone. Butter: 1/63 to 1/7 a lb.
Bacon : 1/7 a lb.
