Year’s Activities Reviewed

MIRAMAR-SEATOUN CLUB The Miramar-Seatoun Chess Club held its eighth annual meeting last week in the Miramar Band room. Ta hi Street, the club’s new headquarters. A dozen members were present ami Mr. A. Walker (president) occupied the chair. 'The balance-sheet showed a small profit on the year’s working. No subscriptions are outstanding. There were 16 entries for the annual lightning tourney, which was won by A. 11. Walker, the runner-up being 11. N. Robie. The annual handicap tourney was won by the club’s only woman member. Mrs. Gadd. who thus bolds the handsome silver cup given by a former president, Mr. G. W. Wood, for the ensuing year. in handing over the Wood Cup to Mrs. Gadd. Mr. F. K. Kelling. the president of the Wellington Chess League, complimented her on her success. As !t result of the season’s ladder matches E. W. Hutchins now holds rung one and IV Arbuthnot rung two.

The club entered two teams for the league’s second grade teams’ tournament. The '’Red’' side won rhe competition and the "Blue” side i which was occasionally shorthanded I finished up in sixth place. The club’s drive for new playing material profited by the successes of these two teams, as Mr. G. W. Wood offered a chess set for every match won by the club in this competition. Six new sets were thus added to the club’s plant. •The election of officers resulted as follows: —President. Mr. A. Walker; lion, secretary mid treasurer, Mr. It. Gadd; committee. Mrs. Guild, Mr. S. Clarke, and Hie officers ex-officio; delegate to Wellington Chess League, Mr. E. W. Hutchings; match committee, Messrs. W. Arbuthnot- E. \V. Hutchings, and A. 11. Walker: lion, auditor. Mr. M. Knudsen. Being absent from New Zealand. Mr. Wood was not available for any oliice. It was decided to nominate Mr. A. 11. Walker for the league's second-grade ctiampion-of-chanipions event, amt to hold a combined championship mid sealed handicap tourney in the coming season. The incoming match committee is to decide on the club's entries for the league's teams’ tourneys. A vote of thanks- was accorded to last year's oilice-bearers, and also to those who assisted with donations (luring the past year.

KARORI CHESS CLUB

The ninth annual general meeting of the Karori Chess Club was held at the Karori School on Wednesday evening. Air. 11. L. P. Dyett, the retiring president, occupied the chair till Hie appointment of his successor, .Mr. M. Gandar. The annual report stated that the club’s season (March 23 to November 30), was most satisfactory. The club is in a good position tinaneially. There was- a drop of 5/- in lite cash balance because of purchase of playing material and a cupboard, which increased Hie assets of Hie club to £23. There are 25 members on the club's roll.

The club’s representatives did well tn the Wellington Chess League's competitions; as regards Hie teams’ tournaments Riey were runners-up in grades 1 and 3, mid came third in grade 2. In the annual champion of champions tourneys A. W. Gyles won Hie first grade event for the eleventh time in 16 years—a very fine record. He further enhanced his reputation for consistency by winning Hie all-Wellington championship, a new competition inaugurated by the league toward the end of Hie season. R. Gilkisou won the second grade championship. In the third grade A. G. E. Taylor found difficulty in arranging games with his opponents, but he won the only game lie played. The season closed with a lightning tournament in which 1.4 competitors took part. It was a handicap event, points beinx allotted to the less experteneed players. The winner was E, RBroom with 12 points, E. W. Ford coming second with 11 points. Tlie election of officers resulted:— President, Mr. M. Gandar: vice-presi-dents, Messrs. A. W. Gyles, H. L. P. Dyett. and G. Whitliam: match committee, Messrs. Gandar. Munden. Dyett, Welch, Grady, Hain and Broom; hon. secretary and treasurer, E. A. Munden; lion, auditor, G. King; hon. reporter, F. K. Kelling: delegates to Wellington’ Chess League, Messrs. R. Gilkison and 111. A. Munden. It was decided to open the season on Wednesday with a lightning tourney.
