The Auckland Boxing Association began its 1939 season to night, when two professional matches were held, in addition to three amateur contests. The first professional bout was a welterweight between Don Johnson and Vic Caltaux, both of Auckland, and it was won by Johnson on points at the end of ten three-minute rounds. lu the second professional match Harry Summers, Australian lightweight, made his first appearance in New Zealand, and he created a very favourable impression by decisively beating Brian McKay, Auckland.
