PLACES IN INDUSTRY

Transfer From Subsidized Jobs

MEN ON PUBLIC WORKS

The opinion that a large percentage of men employed on subsidized jobs under scheme 13 would be employed in the secondary industries was expressed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, on his return to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. He daid the transfer of men from public works to secondary industries would be much easier than a lot of people imagined. “When they come from public works into secondary industry they are coming to permanent employment.” said Mr. Savage, “and that will give them a sense of security that must be of benefit to them. And as we go along it will be made clear by the Government to employers as well as employees that there is security, that it is not merely a flash in the pan.” Referring to the receptions he had had on his visits to Auckland factories last week, Mr. Savage said he had never seen anything like it. “Everyone seemed to be satisfied that the policy of the Government in developing the secondary industries is on the right lines,” said the Prime Minister, “and those who are engaged in the work, employers as well as employees, are confident as to the future. The receptions that were given Mr. Sullivan and myself from the time we arrived in Auckland to the time we left have left, an indelible mark on my mind. Improvement. is to be seen all along the line in all factories. There can be no room for doubting the ability of New Zealanders to do the work that the Government is asking them to do. For quality as well ns quantity ’there is very little left to be desired.”
