BASEBALL TOURNEY

Interprovincial Games WIN FOR CANTERBURY Teams from five provinces competed in a baseball tournament at the Minter Showgrounds, Wellington, on Saturday. The winners were Canterbury, who beat Wellington in a thrilling final. ■ Canterbury were presented with a cup and banner. The Matter signifies that the holders are the baseball champions ot New Zealand. . In future the tournament is to be held annually and challenges for the banner will be issued by the various provinces. Provinces represented on Saturday in addition to Canterbury and Wellington were Auckland, Wanganui and Wairarapa. Drizzling rain marred the day, but nevertheless the games appeared to be thoroughly enjoyed by both players and spectators. The final was -played in the afternoon. The players were introduced to Mr. J. W. Heenan, patron of the New Zealand Baseball Association, and at the conclusion of the game the winners were congratulated by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Lee Martin, who had followed the play with keen interest. The outstanding player tor Wellington was Urwin, who took several, long outfield flies. The Canterbury pitcher Evans was in excellent form. The game was exciting in the final stages, with Canterbury deserving victory because of very smart fielding and better combination than Wellington possessed. A running commentary on the games was given by Mr. Alf Jenkins on the loudspeaker. Players in the final were:—
