Upper Hutt Tragedy
from “The Dominion, ° March 30, 1914. One of the most horrifying tragedies in the history of the district woke most of the people of the Upper Hutt Valley from their beds shortly after midnight yesterday (Sunday) morning, the result being the destruction by fire and explosion of Messrs. Benge and Pratt’s general store, serious damage to adjoining properties and, what is more serious, the loss of no fewer than six lives. Many other people were either in or about the blazing premises at the time of the explosion, and a number of these were more or less seriously injured.
The Federal Prime Minister (Mr. J. Cook) has received a dispatch from the Imperial authorities stating that arrangements for the transfer of Norfolk Island to the control of the Commonwealth will be completed at the end of the present month.
Queensland is experiencing difficulty in attracting immigrants, and has reintroduced assisted passages. Eighty eramigrnnts are sailing for New Zealand by the Tainui. The list includes 15 domestics.
