Newland.s Women's Institute recently held its fifth birthday. Games and competitions were enjoyed by a large number of membere and visiting members; a birthday book was signed by all, and telegrams from other institutes were read.
The president, Airs. Kettlowell, and the secretary, Airs. AVatkins, together with members of the committee and visiting members of the executive committee, were presented with shoulder sprays.
Peggy square rugs were given to the institute babies, and the trophies for the year were presented to Airs. Frazer and 1 Mrs. Prichard, Airs. Stanley receiving a consolation prize donated by Mrs. Knight.
Airs. Kettlewell and Airs. Watkins were each presented with a parcel from their institute members. During the afternoon tea, Airs. Barlow, assisted by Mrs. Knight and Airs. Durnett, cut the birthday cake. Farewell Dance.
Before her departure for .England, where she is to be married, Aliss Alolly Bannister, Alasterton, was guest of honour at a party arranged by three of her friends. Alisses ft Welch, J. Laing and Al. Alackay.
A good orchestra made dancing enjoyable, and Air. A. Alackay acted as master of ceremonies.
Air. Maekay wished Miss Bannister every good wish and happiness for the future. .Many gifts were showered on the bride-to-be to remind her in her English home of her New Zealand friends. Pre-Wedding Party.
Au enjoyable pre-wedding party was held recently, in honour of Miss Eva Ditehl'urn. at the home of Airs. F. Ballinger, AVellington. Mr. AV. Linqius was master of ceremonies for tlie evening, supervising games and competitions. Miss Ditchburn received many lovely gifts from rhe guests. Bridal Gown of Tweed.
A wedding gown of Harris tweed surprised women at a recent dress show in London.
Palest rose-petal pink tweed was chosen to give brides protection against cold spring winds. Satin-laced panels gave the gown a sheath-like fitting, and silk organdie frills peeped from below the petalshaped hemline and appeared again at the shoulder line.
