JUNIOR AND WOMEN’S ATHLETIC TITLES

Meeting At Auckland MISS NORMAN SHOWS HER SUPERIORITY By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 25. The British Empire champion women athlete, Miss Decima Norman, showed her superiority over the Dominion’s finest women performers by decisively winning the 100 yards, the 220 yards and the broad jump championships at the first national junior and women’s title meeting held at Carlaw Park in brilliant weather today. Miss Norman began by beating her old rival, Miss Doreen Lumley, Auckland, by two yards in the final of the 100 yards championship. Great interest centred in this contest, which was eagerly awaited by a crowd of 6000 spectators. Beginning brilliantly, the Australian girl had the contest in hand at the halfway mark, and she went on to win by a clear margin. Her brilliance was again shown in the 220 yards and broad jump championships, both of which she won with ease. At the conclusion of the meeting, Miss Norman and her chaperone, Mrs. J. F. Magee, were farewelled on behalf of New Zealand athletes by Mr. H. L. Towers, president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre. Miss Norman was presented with an inscribed gold tiki, while Mrs. Magee was the recipient of a greenstone tiki. Many brilliant performances were witnessed by a large crowd, the tournament being a pronounced success and its continuation in future years being assured.

The meeting was attended in the morning by the Minister of luteral Affairs, Mr. Parry, and Mrs. Parry, who were welcomed by Mr. Towers.. . The Minister welcomed the assembled athletes and congratulated the officials on their initiative in conducting junior aud women’s championships on a separate basis.

The Towers Shield for the province gaining most points was won by Auckland with 2S points, Canterbury and Otago being equal, second, with 21. Results: —
