SENIOR CRICKET

Postponed Because Of Rain KNOCK-OUT FINAL Early Start Likely Next Saturday Starting shortly after midday, steady rain fell in Wellington on Saturday for about two hours and caused the final round of matches in the senior knock-out cricket competition to be postponed. The ruin had little effect on wickets and outfields, being mainly a thick drizzle. The decision was left in the hands of the team captains on the various grounds. For fully an hour they watched for any sign of the weather lifting. There was none, and play was called off. Later the rain clouds cleared, giving way to warm sunshine, but it was too late. With only one Saturday left to complete the competition, it is considered probable that the Wellington Cricket Association will endeavour to arrange an early start for at least the final between Kilbirnie and Wellington. Lower Grade Results A few lower grade games were played. Results are:— Second Grade. Johnsonville, 58 for no wickets (Moore 41 not out), met Wellington. Midland. 305 (Dalton 86, Ralfe 68, Jack 49, K. MERCANTILE CRICKET Practicaly All Games Abandoned With the exception of a few lower grade games, Mercantile League fixtures on Saturday were cancelled because of the rain. The decisions were left in the hands of the team captains, the majority of whom were unanimous in abandoning the games. As there is only four and a quarter hours’ play in Mercantile League games, it was realized that little purpose would be served in waiting for the weather to clear, particularly in matches which had a vital bearing on championships. In those games which, were completed a late start was made. Tn the B grade. Smith and Smith, 217 for five (Dobbs 75, Henderson 55, Carrington 27,- Roberts 23 ; Heatherwick four for 78), beat Telephone Exchange, 185 (Heatherwick 101, Raxworthy 28). In the E grade, Customs Department, 126 for five, declared (Kean 58, Meiers 3S) aud 115 for one (Kean 50 not out, Perkins 36 not out), beat Insurance A. 69 (Vennimore 39) and 147 (Vennimorc 59).
