A T 11 o’clock One day, we were off
And where were we off to? We went to a picnic at Waipawa Camping Grounds —a Returned Soldiers’ one. We thought we were early, but when we arrived the place seemed full of cars. The sound of music filled the air and the man announced through the loud speaker, that the races were to commence.
As we were all under ten we had no races to run till after lunch. Lunch over, all the little ones went to a separate track. We did very well in our events, but every child got a prize. Our races over, we had a large ice cream. After this came the biggest thrill of all. I ran with Daddy in the three-legged race, “Digger and Daughter,” and we came third in our' beat. Daddy said it was'not bad for a little chap, as you know Kiwi, it’s very awkward to run when you are not the same height as your partner. The bugles , sounded the “fall in,” and the Diggers lined up for the parade. It was a wonderful sight—nearly seven hundred men, and fifteen nurses. They were led by the Ruahine Pipe Band and Sir Andrew Russell took the salute. How we raced to the car for our afternoon tea, for these things make me hungry. After watching a few more events it was time to come home. —Snow Fairy (!)), Takapau. Cockles! YVE walked along the beach to the “Hyderabad,” an old wrecked ship which has been there for years. Coming back we happened to see dozens of little mounds, so we thought we would see what was in them. To our amazement, there were lots of cockles under the surface of the sand. We filled our pockets and shoes with them, and even a hand bag, and had them for breakfast next. day. Although a bit sandy, they made a tasty meal. — Lady Greensleeves (14), Levin.
