THE painting of the Sarah Pile, and that of the Poneke, in the possession of Messrs. Hopkirk Timbers Ltd, constitute a link with the early sett lement of Wellington. These two ships, owned by Messrs. Waddell, McLeod and Weir, used to trade consistently between Wellington and Kaipara with cargoes of the now valuable and disappearing kauri. With their aid, Messrs. Waddell, McLeod and Weir, later McLeod, Weir and Hopkirk, now Hopkirk Timbers Ltd., were instrumental in playing a tremendous part in the growth of the Capital City. Commenced in 1873, the policy of the business has been that of integrity and service, which policy is still at the disposal of the public in its new planton the Hutt Road, Kaiwarra. Messrs. Hopkirk Timbers Ltd. are proud of their association with the Shaw Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., over a long and pleasurable period in servicing their ships with timber. From the Sarah Pile to the Dominion Monarch may seem a far cry, but the association of this company with the progressiveness of the Shaw Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., is a token of the same good service to all. The Poneke, as kauri disappeared from general business usage, was sold to the Melbourne trade. The Sarah Pile remains one of the mysteries of the sea, having sailed upon her last voyage and no news or trace being since received. HOPKIRK TIMBERS LTD. HUTT ROAD s KAIWARRA : WELLINGTON
