Guitry's "The Cheat" To Be Shown In New Zealand
A CTION PICTURES will release “The Cheat” in New Zealand. “The Cheat’’ is the English version of the famous French film, “Roman d’un Tricheur,” starring Sacha Guitry, France’s most notable actor, whose first appearance on the English screen this is. He not only starred in the film, but also directed it. Also, he wrote the original story. The film opens with the hero (Sacha Guitry) writing his memoirs. To the accompaniment of his witty coinmentary, one is shown the rise and fall of a cheat from the moment when, through a childish sin, he is not allowed to eat some questionable mushrooms, which are the means of poisoning the rest of his family. So he decides very early in life that honesty is not the best policy.
Of special interest is the fact that Guitry’s wife, Jacqueline Delubac, appears opposite him. Most of the film was made in France, only those portions absolutely necessary for the English version being shot at Denham Studios.
