New Zealand Release Of "The Mikado"
pRINTS of “The Mikado,” the first; Gilbert and Sullivan opera to reach the screen, arrived in Wellington this week. The film was immediately reviewed, and all who were present at the screening pronounced it to be one of the most brilliant films ever to be produced. Mr. Alan J. Williamson, a director of Gaumont British Dominions Films, will be present at the Dominion premiere of the picture at the Civic Theatre, Christchurch, on Easter Saturday. The colour is said to be better than in any other film, the music is described as glorious, the singing wonderfully good, the recording exceptional, and the photography excellent. The famous choristers of the d’Oyly Carte Opera Company attend to the chorus work of “The Mikado,” and the playing of the celebrated London Symphony Orchestra is said to be amazingly fine.
