LIMITED LATE
Passengers Transferred
Near Otaki Passengers by the Limited express from Auckland were more than two hours late in arriving at ■Wellington yesterday morning. Because of a mechanical defect two wheels of a shunting train left the line about a mile and a quarter north of Otaki early yesterday morning, and as a result the Limited was unable to complete its journey. So that the 170 passengers on the Limited should suffer the minimum of inconvenience, the Railways Department organized a fleet of railway buses and taxis, and conveyed the passengers from Manakau to Otaki. In Otaki a “scratch” train was made up and the passengers were brought on to Wellington, arriving at 11.40 o’clock, just over two hours late. The line was quickly cleared and no serious delay took place to any other express trains. Both the Napier and New Plymouth expresses were not delayed for more than a few minutes, though a mixed train from Paekakariki carrying a number of school children was held up for some time. Five railway buses and.several taxis were used to transfer the passengers on the Limited from Manakau to Otaki.
