THE RACING WORLD

AWAPUNI RACES

Prospects For Tomorrow NOTES AND COMMENTS F. W. Davis Leaving Woodville (By The Watcheb. ) Prospects are bright for a successful meeting at Awapuni this week, where the Manawatu Racing Club will hold its autumn meeting tomorrow and Saturday. Excellent fields are engaged, and the track, as the result of liberal watering, is in first-class order with a thick sole of grass. The principal events for tomorrow will be the Awapuni Gold Cup, at w.f.a., and the King George and J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicaps. Trentham running should have a bearing on form, but there are several fresh horses engaged. Betting will be single pool. The Hurdlers.

In the hurdle race the distance might possibly trouble Hanover, but he won convincingly last start. His stablemate Riotous had a race at New Plymouth, and will probably be a bit new yet. Ent.heos should be suited by the length of the journey an he sticks on well. Southern Blood is a fresh horse who has been eased off during the period of hard tracks. He runs well at Awapuni and will have to be considered. Red Rufus has been fairly consistent with recent placings and may be due for a turn. Maiden Field.

In the Autumn Plate Tom Tom resumes racing, and in form would be hard to beat. Brazil, Cuisinier, Floral Robe and Snigger are possibles on recent form, and Yed Prior has been showing improvement. Trebor Out of Hacks.

Trebor is running out his hack nominations, and though he has 9.9 in the Woodley Handicap he will have to be reckoned ■with on his recent form. Red Cat is a solid mare sure to run well and these two topweights rather overshadow their opponents, though Ecstatic may do better here on the turning course.

Handicap Possibles. Play On and Big Dook appear the likeliest at the top of the handicap in the King George. It might be unwise to discard The Bigot from possibilities on his home track and the form lightweights are Dainty Sue and Entail.

Juvenile Prospects. The Cloverlea Nursery field contains several with good prospects on recent form. They include La Bru, Lutanist, Pearl of Asia, Serenata, Prudent Prince, and Kreimhifd. With any luck in the running the Trentham form of Pearl of Asia and Sorenata should be difficult to overcome.

At Weight-for-age. A fine contest is promised in the Awapuni Gold Cup in which six three-year-olds will do battle against four older horses. Form points distinctly to Beaupartir and Royal Chief, but both Peerless and Taurangi should run well, and a muddling early pace would suit Oratory.

The Sprinters. Laughing Lass may be the favourite for the J. M. Johnston Memorial, but Florence « Mills and Rakahanga should race prominently.

Good Beginning Essential. Hacks in the concluding event will have to begin well. Yours Truly will go well again, for he is a greatly improved colt, and Trentham running also points to Inquisitor, Settlement and Sudan. Sudan looked dangerous at nine furlongs in the Champion Hack here on Saturday. Back to the Game.

Riding work at Trentham last week was P. Mcßrearty, one of our leading riders of jumpers a few years ago. McBrearty has applied for his licence and intends to return to the saddle. He should not lack opportunities.

Property . Sold. The Woodville trainer F. W. Davis has sold his property at 'Woodville and will shortly take up his residence in the Auckland province. Davis will continue to train privately for Mr. W. H. Gaisford. Davis’s stables were purchased by the Woodville Jockey Club. Tangled Goes South.

Rhe steeplechaser Tangled was taken south by the Wingatui trainer F. Shaw when he returned home with Night Pal and Our Pal. Tangled is to compete in steeplechase events at Riverton. Last season he won the Riverton Steeplechase. A Fortune Won.

Before the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington on March 5 J. T. Jamieson, .trainer of High Caste, said the giant colt would win by half a furlong (says a Melbourne writer). High Caste did not gain the honours as easily as that, but he outclassed all except the place-getters, and came home with his ears pricked. Zonda, who finished second, and Aurania, third, were both decidedly unlucky at critical stages of the race, but probably High Caste eould not have been beaten in any ease. High Caste was backed for a fortune. Only "Wilson and Zonda were backed against him. Four bets of £lOOO to £125 were laid against Zonda, and £lOOO to £175 was the best bet against Wilson.
